My Immortal Game | Reporting From The Pfalz Open 2017

Published on Monday, 06 March 2017 12:07

That was close! When my friend told me about a strong chess tournament called the “Pfalz Open” in early February, and I wanted to sign up for it, it was almost too late. Just barely I got myself a place before it was booked out. And let’s be honest, that would have been a pity. A real pity.

To my dismay I had never heard of the Pfalz Open. I must have lived on the moon for the last years (or rather, the U.S.) since with over 500 participants it is one of the biggest tournaments in Germany, growing in size every year. It was no surprise to me that people are coming back year after year to play in the tournament because it was very well organized with a great staff team taking care of the catering and competent arbiters who knew their business.

Now, let’s talk chess. I was ranked No. 5 in the list before the tournament, with a broad field of IMs and GMs making their way to Neustadt an der Weinstraße. There is this saying that the first round is often the toughest and indeed it hold true this time.

"Where is Suriname?"

Together with some chess friends, I have started a new chess blog called beyond-chess.com! On this blog, we explore topics that go beyond the chess board and how chess influences different aspects of our lives. I wrote a post on how chess has allowed me to visit new countries and also learn some geography Verlegen Here's the beginning:

"I felt quite ignorant. When my friend asked me “Would you like to play a tournament in Suriname?”, I immediately replied “What is Suriname?”. Of course, tech-savvy as I am, I used an online search engine named Google to find out. Still, I was not sure. Did he really mean the former Dutch colony in South America, bordering in the South on Brazil and in the West and East on Guyana and French Guyana, respectively? He did. And so..."

Hey guys,

I know it's been ages. You probably thought I am dead or have somehow disappeared from the edge of the Earth. Well, I have not. I just stopped posting on this website and regrettably, I took forever to point this out. Until now.

So, these days I am much more active on my Facebook page and also posting videos to my YouTube Channel. I hope to see you there :)

For all new visitors to my page, hi! You can find more information about myself in the "Biography" tab. Or, if you are a chess geek like me, you can browse through the massive collection of game analyses I have created of my own games and top level games (sometimes there was even an overlapCool)
